RAINBOW FALLS
Rainbow Falls Trail offers both short and longer hiking options in the natural setting above Wrangell. The trail starts with a short, steep climb through a hemlock forest, leading to Rainbow Falls. The waterfall is a key feature of the trail, providing a rewarding destination for a brief outing.
For those looking for a longer hike, the trail continues beyond the falls as the Institute Creek Trail, which leads to a shelter overlooking Shoemaker Bay. This section of the trail offers views from the ridge and passes through wet meadows. The North Wrangell Trail branches off from here, climbing into higher terrain and reaching the High Country and Pond Shelters. These shelters are available for rest or overnight stays for hikers venturing further into the area.
The trail is mostly surfaced with stairs, log steps, and boardwalks, which help navigate the steep and sometimes slippery sections. Hikers should be cautious, particularly if they have knee or hip issues, as the boardwalk can be challenging in wet conditions.
