GETTING AROUND TOWN
Getting Around Wrangell: Convenient and Easy Travel Options
Navigating Wrangell is straightforward, thanks to its compact layout and convenient transportation options. Most accommodations are located near the downtown area, within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants, and popular attractions. While some activities or lodgings may be slightly farther away, they are generally still walkable for most visitors.
Accommodations and Shuttle Services
Many accommodations in Wrangell offer pick-up and drop-off services from the airport or ferry terminal. It’s a good idea to confirm these services when making your reservation. The Stikine Inn, for example, provides a van shuttle service that transports guests to and from the airport or ferry terminal. They may also arrange transportation to other activities, depending on availability. If you’re staying at a Bed & Breakfast, ask your hosts about their transportation policies—many are happy to assist if they can.
Please note that the ferry often arrives late at night or very early in the morning, so it’s important to check with your hosts in advance to ensure they can meet you upon arrival.
Cab Service
Getting around town is easy with two cab companies available: Johnny Cab (907-660-7678) and Tiny's Taxi (907-305-0789). Both services are reliable and convenient for short trips within Wrangell.
Rental Car Service
For those who prefer to drive, Island Escape Rental Cars offers vehicles for hire. Located at the Wrangell Airport, this rental service is particularly busy during peak season (June-August), so it’s recommended to book in advance. Please note that the rental cars are only permitted on in-town paved roads and cannot be driven on forest roads around the island. The rental office operates around the arrival and departure times of Alaska Airlines, so if calling outside those hours, be sure to leave a contact number or email for a return call.
Air Charters
For air travel needs, Sunrise Aviation offers local air charter services, including flightseeing tours and transportation to other Southeast Alaska communities. Additionally, Alaska Seaplanes provides daily scheduled flights from Wrangell to Sitka, offering another convenient travel option.
Exploring Wrangell
Once you’ve settled in, Wrangell’s small size and friendly atmosphere make it easy to explore on foot, by bike, or with any of the local transportation services. Whether you’re visiting historic sites, embarking on outdoor adventures, or simply enjoying the local culture, getting around Wrangell is a breeze.
Water Taxis
Several local jetboat operators offer water taxi services, providing convenient transportation to U.S. Forest Service (USFS) cabins and nearby communities. Breakaway Adventures, for instance, offers regular service to Banana Point on the south end of Mitkof Island, providing an alternative way to reach Petersburg. They also offer service to Prince of Wales Island, Ketchikan, and Juneau based on demand. These water taxis are an excellent way to explore the surrounding islands and remote locations.
Boat Rentals
If you prefer to explore the waters at your own pace, Wrangell offers a variety of small boat rentals. Alaska Vistas rents kayaks and canoes, while Breakaway Adventures rents canoes, and Alaska Waters provides stand-up paddleboards. Some other operators may also have canoes or kayaks available for rent to their clients. Whether you're paddling along the shoreline or venturing into more remote areas, these rentals provide an excellent way to experience Wrangell's natural beauty.
